Hickey: A Handwritten Script Font That Feels Like Marker Board Magic

Real-World Design: Picking Hickey for a Product Launch Series

While prepping a set of Instagram Stories for a new digital course launch, I needed a font that felt personal, energetic, and just a little bit playful. The campaign visuals leaned into a casual, approachable brand voice—think behind-the-scenes tutorials, quote graphics, and soft-sell teaser clips. That’s when I reached for Hickey. Its marker-board style gave the content a handwritten, spontaneous feel without looking sloppy or overused. It stood out in the feed, especially on mobile, and helped maintain a consistent visual tone across multiple posts.

Visual Personality: What Hickey Brings to the Table

Hickey is a brush script font that mimics the texture and flow of marker strokes on a whiteboard. It’s not overly polished or calligraphic, which gives it a modern, approachable edge. The font has a casual rhythm and a slight bounce in its baseline, making it feel lively and expressive. It’s best used for short, attention-grabbing text—like headlines, captions, or quote overlays—rather than long-form content. Hickey’s style makes it ideal for brands that want to communicate warmth, creativity, and a human touch.

What sets Hickey apart is its authenticity. It doesn’t try to be a perfect cursive or mimic calligraphy. Instead, it leans into the imperfections of marker strokes—varying thickness, slight smudges, and a soft texture. This gives it a tactile, almost nostalgic appeal, which works well for lifestyle brands, educators, content creators, and small businesses that want to feel more personable and less corporate.

Campaign Use: From YouTube Thumbnails to Email Banners

In a recent campaign for a seasonal webinar series, I used Hickey across multiple formats: YouTube thumbnails, email headers, and Instagram post captions. It worked especially well in thumbnails where the background was a simple whiteboard-style image. Overlaying the title in Hickey made the text pop without needing extra effects. In email headers, it added a personal note feel, which helped soften the promotional message.

For Instagram, I paired Hickey with a clean sans serif like Montserrat or Lato to create a visual contrast between the headline and supporting text. This combo helped guide the viewer’s eye and made the content more digestible, especially on fast-scrolling feeds. On Pinterest, where image clarity and readability matter, Hickey worked well for quote pins and DIY project titles, particularly when used in bold and with good spacing.

Readability and Design Tips for Best Results

While Hickey is expressive, it’s not a font for every situation. I found it most effective when used at medium to large sizes—ideal for headlines, callouts, and short captions. It’s not suited for body copy, footnotes, or anything that requires precise legibility on small screens. When designing for mobile, I made sure to keep the text short and increase letter spacing slightly to prevent the strokes from blending together.

Contrast is key when using Hickey on backgrounds. It shines brightest on light, neutral, or whiteboard-style backgrounds. For dark themes, I used a thick white outline or a drop shadow to ensure visibility. On image overlays, I often placed a soft white or semi-transparent background behind the text to maintain readability without sacrificing visual appeal.

When Hickey Isn’t the Right Fit

There were a few instances where Hickey didn’t perform as well. In a dense promotional banner for an online shop sale, the font became too busy when used for more than a few words. It also didn’t work for a formal brand identity project where the tone needed to feel more polished and professional. Hickey’s informal vibe makes it a poor choice for corporate reports, legal disclaimers, or technical data. It’s best reserved for short, expressive text where personality and warmth are key.

Font Pairing and Practical Design Integration

One of the biggest advantages of Hickey is how well it pairs with other fonts. I frequently used it with clean sans serif fonts for a modern contrast, but it also works with minimalist serif fonts for a slightly more elevated look. For example, pairing Hickey with a font like Roboto or Merriweather helped maintain visual balance while keeping the design from feeling too casual.

When integrating Hickey into templates, I made sure to check the available styles and alternates. The font includes ligatures and stylistic sets that can add subtle variation to repeated use. It also supports multiple languages and comes in both OTF and TTF formats, making it versatile for international campaigns or multilingual content. Before using it in client work, I always double-checked the licensing to ensure it was cleared for commercial use, especially for digital products, merchandise, or branded templates.
